Concrete Cubes for Coral Reef Reforestation

Sika Thailand produces about 80,000 tons of mortars, admixtures and resins per year. Major waste volumes are cement and sand, which so far have been sent to landfill. A new cooperation with a local naval school was started to use these materials to fix their buildings and roads, and to recycle the material into concrete cubes for coral reef reforestation.

Corals have been reduced in the recent years due to coral bleaching from extensive fishing and extermination by humans. In 2016, 840 concrete cubes were produced with waste materials and planted with corals. These provide a new habitat for marine life. For 2017, the target is to plant 2,000 corals. What an amazing project!
