Fully bonded durable watertightness
SikaProof® A is an innovative fully bonded sheet membrane system for damp- and waterproofing in basement and below ground structures. Its highly flexible polyolefin membrane, with a special sealant grid and nonwoven fleece provide a unique, mechanical bond effect to the concrete structure and prevent any lateral water underflow between the membrane and the concrete.
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
To show the environmental benefits from using thermoplastic SikaProof® A System compared to the mainly used competitive bituminous solutions, a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for 1 m² of two waterproofing systems with similar performance was made. The LCA is from cradle to gate, which means it investigates the potential environmental impacts from raw material acquisition and processing to manufacturing of the product.
Cumulative Energy Deman (CED) and Global Warming Potential (GWP)
To illustrate the lower environmental impacts from the SikaProof® A System, the Cumulative Energy Demand (CED) and the Global Warming Potential (GWP) are shown below. CED accounts for the consumption of energy resources, namely the primary energy from renewable and non-renewable resources. GWP measures the potential contribution to Climate Change, focusing on emissions of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO₂).
Lower carbon and energy footprint
The LCA clearly shows that SikaProof® A uses fewer resources than a typically applied bituminous solution (1 kg/m² vs. 7 kg/m²), resulting in a significantly lower carbon and energy footprint – in fact replacing mass by technology, thereby providing higher performance per mm waterproofing layer.
Besides the demonstrated environmental benefits, the SikaProof® solution also brings additional benefits, such as easier application (no primer, no need to weld and no flame like the bitumen solution), It is a long lasting solution with no maintenance needs and easily repairable.
Cumulative Energy Demand (CED)
In terms of CED, the raw materials of the SikaProof® A System have considerably less impact than those of the bitumen system. The net gain from using the Sika solution amounts to 220 MJ per m² (a saving equivalent to 5 litres fuel).
Global Warming Potential (GWP)
In terms of GWP, the raw materials of SikaProof® A System have less than half the impacts of the bitumen system. The net gain from using the Sika solution amounts to 4 kg CO₂ per m².
