Body Shop

The sustainable design of cars, for ecological as well as economical reasons, requiring lightweight, fuel-efficient and durable structural bonding, will be the big challenge of the next decade. For that, Sika provides a Bodyshop product portfolio to help the customers reach their goals.

Sealants

SikaPower Body Shop sealants are seam-sealing materials with very good corrosion resistance and gap filling properties. Special properties include excellent manual and automatic application (bead, fine jet and slot nozzle), wash out resistance, e-coatability, excellent durability and good shelf life.

Anti-Flutter-Material

The SikaSeal range of products are special elastomeric, rubber-based, hot-curing, anti-flutter and weld-through sealants. Typical application areas for SikaSeal products are hang-on parts (doors, hoods, tailgates) and roof rails. The major customer benefit of SikaSeal products is in the excellent read through performance on thin steel and aluminium panels.

Hemflange Bonding

Sika has a broad range of Sika Power products that are used for hemflange bonding.

SikaPower hemflange adhesives are applied using swirl, bead or fine jet nozzles. In order to avoid “zero gap” in the hemflange, most SikaPower hemflange adhesives contain glass beads to ensure constant distance between outside and inside panels.

Structural Bonding

Structural bonding with SikaPower is the biggest body shop application. Increase of body stiffness, high strength bonding and joining of different metal surfaces, excellent oil absorption, good wash-out resistance, reduction of spot welding points, long term corrosion resistance and long shelf-life are the most important material properties.

Crash Resistant Bonding

Crash resistant structural bonding with SikaPower is the most critical jointing in the body shop. Extraordinary increase in energy absorption in the event of collision (impact peel) is the main SikaPower adhesive benefit. Others include ageing performance, excellent durability, superior wash out resistance and process properties.

Reinforcing System

The Reinforcing System is a thermally expandable lightweight structural solution based on epoxy reinforcement technology. SikaReinforcer is cohesively moulded to its 3D SikaStructure filling cavities to improve vehicle stiffness (Safety, Durability and NVH).

SikaStructure is a plastic, steel or hybrid 3D engineered composite design used in a conjunction with SikaReinforcer.

The moulded combination of SikaReinforcer and SikaStructure is designed to increase stiffness and structural integrity. This engineered, lightweight solution offers potential replacement for high strength steel and other substrates.

The moulded, customized SikaReinforcer/SikaStructure component can be robot aided or manually inserted into vehicle cavities such as:

  • A, B, C and D-pillars
  • Frame rails
  • Beams
  • Doors

Acoustic Solution

The Sika Acoustic System (SikaBaffle and SikaDamp) consists of heat reactive, pre-moulded; extruded and designed, die cut parts. The full Acoustic System package (Thermoplastic and Elastomeric) is optimized to reduce noise propagation through the primary body structure from entering into the passenger compartment. The Acoustic System (SikaBaffle) is designed to seal the vehicle body cavities, and to dampen (SikaDamp) the vibration of the body panels resulting in increased passenger comfort.

SikaBaffle is a 3D Thermoplastic (moulded) or Elastomeric (extruded) component, designed to seal a body cavity, to provide significant increase in vehicle acoustic performance. SikaBaffle products are designed with various volumetric expansions to seal body cavities to OEM design parameters. The component is inserted into the body structure during assembly and expands many hundreds of times in the electro-deposited (E-Coat) oven. The high degree of expansion and the three-dimensional design mean that complex design cavities can be filled.

SikaDamp is a non-curing, lightweight, extruded Elastomeric constrained layer damper co–extruded on either aluminium foil or a glass cloth for ease of application and production integration.
