Paint Shop

Many components of a car cannot withstand the high temperatures incurred in the baking stage following the body-in-white (BIW) phase of construction. Some of these include sealants, adhesives and damping products used for finishing and quality. Or sometimes, it is just appropriate for finishing touches to be applied only in the paint shop.

Examples of Sika’s paint shop range includes:

  • SikaDamp® for vibration dampening and increased panel stiffness
  • Sikaflex®, for bonding, filling and sealing

Damping

SikaDamp products are non-curing, lightweight, elastomeric, constrained layer, pre-shaped, technology. SikaDamp technology is used to damp the vibration of body panels such as door, hood, roof, or trunk areas. SikaDamp products typically contain an aluminum foil constrained layer, but can be supplied with a glass cloth for specific applications and production processes.

Sealants

After the baking stage, but before paint is applied, joints, cracks and crevices must be sealed to prevent air and moisture penetration. Sikaflex in one or more of its numerous variations is used extensively for this purpose. Some of the properties in the available product types are enhanced to suit the particular OEM application. E.g. shorter open time, more flexible modulus, greater strength. But all provide a durable, quality finish and each can be over-painted.
