Project Description

The Spiez Laboratory is the Swiss centre of expertise in protection against nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) threats and hazards. The DDPS safety laboratory (SiLab) at the centre is designed as a facility where Risk Group (RG) 3 and 4 human pathogenic agents can be handled in the utmost safety. Worldwide, there are very few facilities which fulfil the extreme RG 4 security standard, which allows the safe handling of the world’s most dangerous biological hazards including deadly viruses such as Ebola and Anthrax.

To provide this high level of security in the buildings, a so-called “box-in-a-box” system has been used. The entire ground floor laboratory area is enclosed by an absolutely air-tight concrete containment structure, then outside of this concrete structure there is a second containment shell made of steel and glass which also totally encloses the structure from the external environment.

Project Requirements

International Security Level 4 (RG 4) in an airtight “box-in-a-box” design that has totally sealed floor, walls and ceilings, with easily de-contaminable and biological resistant surfaces.
