The facade which is composed of steel structures needed to be protected against fire and reach the fire resistance of R30 and R60. After the evaluation carried out among planners, Steel frame constructor and owner, Sika Pyroplast was chosen to be the right fire protection system for the facade. About 1,100 tonnes fire protection material were applied to the load-bearing steel framework, covering altogether five floors including the structures inside and outside the building.

To obtain a more spacious layout, two walls were removed from the ground floor of the existing building. As a result of proposals made by the contractor, the traditional solution originally planned by the structural engineer was changed in favour of a more efficient alternative using Sika CarboDur, post-tensioned CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced plastic) tendons. The alterations at Hohenems Agricultural College also included structural strengthening of several floor slabs with untensioned Sika CarboDur CFRP plates.

Contractor won the bid with dispersion adhesive which is approx. 70 % less expensive than SikaBond-T52 FC. Final execution was conducted with the SikaBond Dispenser-5400 and SikaBond-T52 FC. Due to the fast adhesive application and the fast curing properties of SikaBond-T52 FC (early sanding), the contractor made by the end of the project about 1’800 € more profit than the bid with the cheap dispersion adhesive.
