The New York City Subway is one of the oldest and most extensive public transportation systems in the world, with 468 stations in operation; 229 miles (369 km) of routes.

In planning for more than 50 years, the 2nd Avenue subway line is now becoming a reality. A number of different methods will be used to tunnel for 13.7 kilometers (9 mi) underneath Manhattan, which is densely populated. 90% of the tunneling will be performed by a tunnel boring machine. The rest of it will be done using the cut and cover method and mined drill and blast, for sections, generally the 16 stations, that average 275 meters (902 ft) in length.

Tunnel projects of Tokyo Metro Line 13 are one of the biggest construction projects in Japan. A new metropolitan subway is extended to Shibuya Station,one of the biggest stations in Tokyo. The tunnel is constructed by dig and cast method, where waterproofing layer of 27’000 m2 in total is established prior to concrete walls.

The Dubai Metro is a driverless, fully automated metro network that will already be the largest in the world, at over 70 kilometres, when the second ‘Green Line’ of the four planned lines is fully open in 2011. These first two lines that are nearing completion have elevated sections for 58.7 km and underground sections in tunnels for 12.6 km.

The railway station Wien Mitte is very centrally located between the center of Vienna (Innenstadt) and the precinct Landstrasse. With 30’000 railway passengers per day, Wien Mitte is the highest frequented railway station in Vienna. At this junction several railway lines and two underground lines (U3 and U4) intersect.

The upgrade of the underground system in Milan include the 1 km double tunnel on line M1 from external city to the new exhibition area of Rho Fiera; the Dergano – Comasina 4 km tunnels on Line M3 and the construction of fully authomatic light underground line M5 on a length of 6 km.

AlpTransit Gotthard is creating a flat rail link for future travel through the Alps. At the heart of the new transalpine rail route is Gotthard Base Tunnel. With a length of 57 km, the world’s longest tunnel should become operational at the end of 2016.

Perth is experiencing a massive change to their transport infrastructure at present with a double track railway being contsructed from Northbridge to Mandurah. That’s 163 km of track work from the CBD to the south of the city. The construction works are broken up into two sections the new metro rail system underground in the city, and the new rail link heading south. The new Metro Rail will effectively double Perth’s rail network!
