Public transport authorities now increasingly base their investment decisions on life-cycle costs, not just on a comparison of purchasing prices per unit. Hybrid structures are being used more and more in order to keep life-cycle costs at a low level. Traditional fastening techniques - most notably welding - can no longer be used in modular construction. They would damage heat-sensitive components made from plastics or other modern composites - and they often require extensive finishing work.
