Sustainable mortars: Portland cement is estimated to generate approximately one tonne of carbon dioxide per produced tonne of finished cement. Reducing the amount of Portland cement in mortars is proven to improve resource efficiency and make a commitment to the environment.
Resource efficiency is improved by replacing part of the cement with a waste material (fly ash, slag), which may otherwise be disposed to a landfill or other. This also helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and can contribute to Climate Protection. The Optiroc Eco line is designed to reduce the amount of cement in mortars with a supplementary cement materials (SCM) e.g. fly ash or slag.

Who is LCS Optiroc?

Choong Fee Chong: LCS Optiroc was established in 2004 for the purpose of operating a cementitious dry-mortar business in Singapore and the region. LCS Optiroc operates two dry-mortar plants, one is located in Singapore and the other in Johor Bahru, Southern Malaysia.

In the last 10 years, LCS Optiroc has supplied its wide range of dry-mortar products to the local Public Housing Development Board (HDB) new building and upgrading projects, private sector condominiums, apartments, quasi-government institutional and commercial industrial projects.

Why are Optiroc mortars considered to be sustainable?

Choong Fee Chong: The Optiroc-Eco range of mortars reduce the carbon footprint. The Eco range of mortars also provide important product differentiation in our building industry that places strong emphasis on environmental protection.

Why is it recommendable to use supplementary cement materials (SCM)?

Choong Fee Chong: There are strong emphasis and encouragement by governments to focus on sustainability in buildings. Hence, it is important that we do our part to protect our environment by producing and using more environmentally friendly Green Products. The SCM provides a meaningful sustainable differentiation of building materials in the building and construction industry and incorporates internationally recognised best practices in environmental protections.

Wich role does the location Singapore play?

Choong Fee Chong: Singapore has been in the forefront in promoting Eco Line products and building materials as the Government is championing the reduction of carbon footprint for all new buildings. Building sustainability is a very important subject in Singapore today. The Government of Singapore has strongly encouraged all developers, architects and builders to include a certain percentage of Optiroc-Eco materials for all new buildings.
