Sika's first Sustainable Packaging Challenge for North America was launched in March 2023 with the goal of working with current and potential suppliers to find innovative sustainable packaging solutions that can help Sika achieve its sustainability goals in the near future. The North American challenge included five different packaging solutions: Corrugated boxes, valve bags, plastic cartridges, plastic buckets, and tinplate buckets.

Sika Strives for Sustainability in Packaging

Suppliers had two months to submit their sustainable and innovative packaging proposals that could meet Sika's requirements. They were then evaluated by a 12-member committee made up of Sika's key departments, from sustainability to procurement and operations to marketing and product management.

The goal of the committee, which is made up of all departments, is to ensure that the winning proposal is ultimately adopted by Sika and receives the support it needs to facilitate the integration of a new and sustainable packaging solution into the company's operations. More than 20 packaging suppliers participated in the competition. Five of them were selected as finalists and invited to participate in the final live exhibition, which took place on July 11, 2023, in Lyndhurst, NJ.

During the live exhibition, finalists were asked to prototype their proposals. The winner of Sika's 1st Sustainable Packaging Challenge for North America is Berry Global, a U.S.-based global packaging manufacturing company that strives to minimize the impact of its products and operations while helping its customers meet their ambitious sustainability goals. Their proposal consisted of plastic buckets that are 100% recyclable and 30% PCR material to reduce virgin material consumption and lower the carbon footprint while maintaining the same bucket performance.
