Governance and Leadership for Sustainability and Innovation

Over the past years, Sika has strengthened its sustainability and innovation organization, with clear roles and responsibilities across all levels of the company. This setup ensures that sustainability is consistently embedded into governance, strategy execution, and innovation activities worldwide.

Management

The Board of Directors (BoD) and the Board Chair are responsible for Sika’s sustainability performance. The BoD reviews and endorses the development and implementation of sustainability policies and strategies, and the Board Chair oversees sustainability-related topics by receiving regular updates from Group Management. 

The Sustainability Committee (SC) prepares sustainability-related topics for discussion and decision-making in the Board. The SC validates a formal ESG impact, risk and opportunity assessment via the Double Materiality Assessment (DMA); monitors regulatory developments and their impacts on Sika; sets measurable goals that are aligned with the company’s strategy; and approves the annual sustainability report. 

The Chief Innovation & Sustainability Officer is a member of Group Management, leading both the global Innovation and Sustainability functions. This integrated setup accelerates the company’s ability to embed sustainability in the innovation processes and strengthens Sika’s leadership position in the industry.

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a Member of Group Management and leads the Corporate Finance function, which is responsible for financial and non-financial (ESG) controlling.

The Head Human Resources, Legal, and Compliance Member of Group Management who leads the Human Resources, Legal, and Compliance functions to ensure business integrity, compliance with the law, respect for human and labor rights, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), and people development.

The Head Global Procurement & Supply Chain reports directly to the CEO and is not a Member of Group Management. This function ensures that sustainability is embedded across procurement and supply chain activities.

The Head Global Operations & EHSQ (environment, health, safety, and quality) is a direct report to the CEO and is not a member of Group Management. This function ensures that sustainability is a key topic for Operations and is supported by the EHSQ function.

Sustainability

The Sustainability Leadership team orchestrates sustainability-related projects and facilitates the interaction and information exchange across functions and departments at Group and regional level, combining three areas: Controlling, Sustainable Products, and Sustainable Portfolio. The Sustainability Leadership team reports directly to the Chief Innovation & Sustainability Officer.

The Internal Sustainability Townhall is chaired by the Chief Innovation & Sustainability Officer, and it allows corporate functions to meet quarterly and exchange information about all sustainability-related projects aimed at achieving sustainability targets within the whole organization.

A network of three Regional Sustainability Managers, coordinated by the Sustainability Leadership team, is tasked with implementing the sustainability pillars of the Strategy. Together with Regional EHS and Operations managers, they support local subsidiaries in setting and developing their dedicated sustainability roadmaps and in implementing Group initiatives. 

Local Sustainability Managers are responsible for planning sustainability  initiatives and developing a sustainability roadmap at country level, with the support of General Managers, Operations & EHSQ, Target Markets, and R&D Managers.

Innovation

With more than 1,800 R&D specialists, Sika operates 16 Global Technology Centers and over 100 regional and local laboratories. These centers bring together expertise in materials science, chemistry, and digital technologies, forming one of the industry’s most interconnected innovation networks. Here, researchers, scientists, engineers, partners and customers collaborate to transform ideas into high-performance, market-ready solutions.

Innovation activities in terms of products and solutions are built on five Core Technologies: Concrete Systems, Cementitious Systems, Coating Systems, Thermoplastic Systems, and Adhesive Systems. Each is led by a dedicated Technology Manager responsible for global development planning, execution, and alignment across Global Technology Centers as well as regional and local laboratories, working closely with the target market organization.

This role directs corporate research teams working across chemistry, materials science, and digital methods to provide tools and technologies that help Sika innovate faster and deliver sustainable, high-performing products. The research teams closely align and partner with corporate and regional R&D functions for product development.

This role designs and oversees Sika’s innovation processes and reports directly to the Chief Innovation & Sustainability Officer. It  ensures strategic objectives, quality standards, customer requirements, and market trends are embedded in every innovation project. The goal is to integrate sustainability and innovation across functions while enabling initiatives that respond to evolving customer and market dynamics.

The Global Innovation team brings together expertise in digitalization, data science, opportunity scouting, and early-stage exploration to drive forward-thinking solutions. Regional exploration teams form part of this global structure, strengthening collaboration and accelerating new concepts and partnerships. This innovation approach features a newly designed exploration process and a strong customer-centric mindset.

The Head of Intellectual Property at Sika defines and drives the company’s global IP strategy, ensuring that innovation is effectively protected and that technological excellence is translated into sustainable competitive advantageand long-term business value.

Working closely with R&D, business units, and external partners, the IP function safeguards Sika’s proprietary technologies, supports freedom to operate, and enables the legally secure and risk-aware commercialization of new products and solutions.

By building and leveraging a high-quality IP portfolio, the IP team strengthens Sika’s technological leadership, enables differentiated and sustainable innovations, that deliver long-term value for customers and society. 

Research and Development

The research and development of new products, systems, technologies, applications, and production processes form the basis of Sika’s innovations. Its research activities are carried out by more than 1,800 employees across 16 global Technology Centers, and more than 100 local and regional research and development facilities in more than 90 locations.

The Chief Innovation & Sustainability Officer combines Innovation and Sustainability. That allows Sika to strengthen and accelerate its concept for enabling sustainable construction and transportation by placing sustainability aspects at the core of strategic and operational innovation processes, while simultaneously driving operational leverage and excellence across the organization. To help address the global challenge, Sika is addressing climate change comprehensively in its strategic development and has laid important foundations to become a net zero company by 2050.
